The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes program announced last week that former Arizona lawmaker Gabby Giffords would serve as the honorary chairman of the program’s Military Spouse Employment Advisory Council.
Giffords, who is also a military spouse, announced the news in a video message alongside husband Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain.
“While members of the military put on the uniform—they are not the only ones who serve,” Giffords said. “I’m proud to join hands with military spouses to help them put their unique skills to work in their communities.”
In her role as honorary chairman, Giffords will advocate for the Hiring Our Heroes program to help bring awareness to the challenges military spouses face in their job searches. The program established a standalone division for military spousal employment last year, and the division hosts 20 job fairs for military spouses at bases across the country.
The program’s Military Spouse Advisory Council is comprised of firms committed to military spousal employment, and LinkedIn Networks help spouses identify employment opportunities. The program also features an eMentor program that connects spouses with employers, as well as networking receptions held in conjunction with job fairs.
“We are honored to have Congresswoman Giffords as an ambassador for our program,” Eric Eversole, the executive director of Hiring Our Heroes, said. “As a military spouse, she understands the challenges faced by military spouses and will inspire them as they search for meaningful employment opportunities.”
