Barclaycard and American Express announced recently that they plan to expand their business relationship to allow Barclaycard to issue American Express network-approved cards for the first time in the U.K.
“Today’s news that two of the world’s leading payments businesses will be working more closely in the U.K. will mean greater choice for U.K. consumers,” Barclaycard CEO Valerie Soranno Keating said. “It also reinforces Barclaycard’s position as a partner of choice in the payments industry and as a leading innovator in U.K. payments.”
Barclaycard and American Express will begin product development over the next year and plan to announce product details later in the year. The move will increase the number of options and products available to Barclaycard customers.

In 2011, Barclaycard U.S. announced a partnership with Cartera Commerce to allow cardholders access to discounts, rewards, miles and cash-back for purchases at participating retailers.
