Reps. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) and Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) were honored on Tuesday by the League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates as the 2013 Lawmakers of the Year for their support of credit unions.
Bachus and Hastings were presented the award, which recognizes lawmakers who have co-sponsored legislation and voted in support of credit union-favored positions, during a reception at the Credit Union National Association’s Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.
Hastings, a longtime member of BrightStar Credit Union in Sunrise, Fla., co-sponsored several pieces of legislation that would increase the member business lending cap from 12.25 percent to 27.5 percent of total assets. Credit unions maintain the current MBL cap hampers their ability to provide needed lending to members.
Bachus co-sponsored legislation to allow credit unions access to additional forms of capital, and he also co-sponsored a bill that would reform privacy notifications.
“Reps. Bachus and Hastings have shown, through their actions, that they understand the issues facing credit unions,” LSCU & Affiliates President and CEO Patrick La Pine said. “Each has co-sponsored multiple pieces of legislation that will help credit union members. Plus, each is always open to meeting with credit unions and listening to real world stories about the issues.”
