USM opens Maine Cyber Security Cluster with ribbon-cutting ceremony

University of Southern MaineThe University of Southern Maine (USM) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday for the Maine Cyber Security Cluster, a research lab housed at the university that will teach student workers how to combat a number of security threats.

Construction for the lab began earlier this year at USM’s science building, with $1 million in grant support from the National Science Foundation and Maine Technology Institute.

Students working in the lab will learn how to develop ways to inform the public of data breaches, educate the public on how to maintain the integrity of personal data and how to combat malicious software.

A separate $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation allowed the lab to establish a private network that connects UMaine System and Maine Community College, thereby allowing students to experiment with computer viruses without the risk of contaminating other networks.
