NTT DOCOMO, MasterCard to launch iD/PayPass payment system

220px-MasterCard_Logo.svgNTT DOCOMO and MasterCard announced on Tuesday the upcoming launch of iD/PayPass-branded payments through DOCOMO’s iD mobile credit payment system, providing iD users in over 50 countries increased access to MasterCard PayPass acceptance locations.

Beginning in February, payments through iD/PayPass will be available to DOCOMO subscribers using smartphone devices equipped with a contactless chip for Osaifu-Keitai. Current users tap their smartphone reader over a reader device to make payments anywhere MasterCard PayPass is accepted outside of Japan.

The payment feature uses PayPass technology deployed by MasterCard using contactless chips. In Japan, DOCOMO subscribers will have the ability to use its iD system for mobile credit payments. Customers can experience the iD/PayPass payment process during a pre-launch campaign to be held in Hawaii in December.

NTT DOCOMO serves more than 61 million mobile customers in Japan through wireless networks, including one of the world’s first commercial LTE networks and a nationwide 3G network.

The company provides technologies for NFC mobile payments, mobile GPS, mobile TV, smart grids and others, and internationally, it provides technical and operational expertise to eight mobile operators and affiliates. It is listed on the Tokyo, London and New York stock exchanges.
